The coffee shop was also where her connection with Mraz began. In its contemporaneous wedding coverage, Us Weekly reported that the pair met through mutual friends there in 2007, drawing on their interview with The Osider. They began dating in 2011. The distinction matters: their first meeting and the beginning of their relationship were four years apart.
Carano’s comments from that interview, reproduced by Us Weekly, explain how she came to know him. She described attending concerts and small gatherings at his Oceanside home. Carano and Mraz married at Historic Polegreen Church in Mechanicsville, Virginia, on October 25, 2015. ABC News obtained confirmation from Mraz’s representative, who described a small gathering of close family and friends. Terces Engelhart of Café Gratitude led the ceremony.
Entertainment Tonight reported that approximately 50 guests attended. Mraz shared a photograph of Carano at the outdoor venue, making the wedding public through his social media accounts.
Her Connection to Know. and “Might as Well Dance”
Carano also became part of the story behind Mraz’s 2018 album Know. In an August 2018 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he described the record as a collection of love letters written mostly to his wife, with some addressed to himself. That provides a direct connection between their marriage and the album without assuming that every song recounts a specific private event.
The video for “Might as Well Dance” included footage from their wedding. Mraz told Entertainment Tonight that he asked Carano’s permission to use it, explaining that he had originally expected the footage to be seen only by friends and family. The video therefore brought part of their wedding into his professional work several years after the ceremony.
What the Reporting Says About Their Divorce
Carano is Mraz’s former wife. However, the dates associated with their separation should not be treated as interchangeable.
ABC News reported in November 2023 that Carano had filed for divorce in December 2021. CNN’s reporting that same month stated that Mraz had announced during the summer that they were divorced. A filing begins a legal process; a public announcement tells audiences about it. Neither should automatically be presented as the exact date a divorce became final.
In coverage of his November 2023 GLAAD interview, CNN reported that Mraz credited Carano with helping him accept his bisexuality. He also discussed the difficulty of divorce and making peace with past relationships.
